Tell us about your journey into your role at Seven West Media?
I started with what was then WA Newspapers at the Albany Advertiser in 2006, moving to The West the following year to take up a cadetship. Over the years I have worked as a feature writer, court reporter, general news reporter, columnist and magazine editor. I left in 2012 to work at the China Daily newspaper in Beijing for a few years but ended up back at The West in late 2016. We launched PLAY magazine in 2019 when the then-Editor Anthony De Ceglie wanted to create a new, cool entertainment magazine with the best things to see, do, eat and experience in Perth and I was thrilled when he asked me to take on the role of editor.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
There is no typical day which is exactly what I love about this job. On any given day I can be interviewing any number of fascinating people for features, researching and writing columns or sourcing photos.
Who or what inspires you the most?
I am endlessly inspired by my colleagues. I work with lots of innovative and creative people. The industry has changed dramatically since I started working and watching how people change, adapt and innovate is motivation to make sure I also stay current and learn to move with a changing media landscape.
What is one of the most rewarding projects you’ve worked on at Seven West Media?
PLAY magazine has been a really rewarding project to work on. Being the inaugural editor of a magazine and being able to build the product from the ground up is a rare opportunity and one that has been interesting, challenging and rewarding.
If you could give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Wear sunscreen.
What does leadership mean to you?
The best leaders lead by example, are honest, hardworking and put aside their own ego for the sake of the team.
