Tell us about your journey into your role at Seven West Media?
John Wooden, an infamous American basketball coach, once said ‘that a player who makes a team great is better than a great player’. I’d like to believe that in my role as ‘Advertising Trainer’ that I’m a team player who helps make our team greater. I’m a storyteller and through those stories I mentor, coach, train and inspire people to be their very best. I feel honoured and privileged to make a small difference in the lives of the incredible people in our team every day. It is without doubt the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
A typical day for me is always around engaging with the awesome sales team we have at Seven West Media Perth. I’ll generally have a few one-on-one sessions with team members where we discuss everything sales and/or life issues. I’m often doing group presentations around things like objection handling, time management, client discovery, the power of giving, meeting etiquette, etc anything that can help give our team that extra arrow to their sales quiver. I onboard and showcase our wonderful work home to new staff and clients, and help with a variety of staff training exercises such as phone sales, response decks, presenting etc. To feel like you are helping people is super rewarding.
Who or what inspires you the most?
Muhammad Ali, The All Blacks, family, friends, music, sport, yummy food.
What is one of the most rewarding projects you’ve worked on at Seven West Media?
Hands down SWM101. This was an idea our CSO, Brent Stewart, came up with around engaging with people new to the advertising industry. It’s about strengthening our relationships with them and for them to get a look under the hood of Seven West Media. We take them on a tour of our phenomenal print centre, followed by a tour of Newspaper House and finishing with a yummy lunch, a 101 presentation of our ecosystem and a chance to meet the SWM team that looks after them. We’ve had an incredible response It’s been extremely fun and something I’m very proud to be a part of.
If you could give your younger self some advice, what would it be?
Buy heaps of shares in Microsoft, Apple and Google, and a ton of Bitcoin as soon as you hear about these companies.
Also, be you and be vulnerable. Being truly vulnerable will give you an authentic confidence and power like you never knew was possible.
What does leadership mean to you?
To me leadership is all about service. The primary responsibility of a leader is to build new leaders. It’s about empowerment, responsibility, inspiration and results. It’s about action and example and making others better by creating an environment where everyone thrives together.
